Aziyev Yevstafiy

Biography

 

Composer and choral conductor, choirmaster of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.
Aziev is the author of more than 80 spiritual compositions, including stichyra and cherubic songs. He is also the author of several romances (including "Sleep, My Child, Sleep!" based on the poems of A. N. Maikov). Aziev's church music is based on arrangements of ancient chants that follow a strict style of harmony. 
In 1883-1884, together with other chapel teachers under the direction of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, he participated in the creation of the collection "Singing at the All-Night Vigil of Ancient Chants". He also worked as a choirmaster at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, taking part in the first productions of the operas The Pskovite and May Night by Rimsky-Korsakov, who highly appreciated him as a choirmaster. After Rimsky-Korsakov's death, Yevstafii Stepanovych edited and prepared for publication his sacred music works (1913). In 1907-1917, Azeev taught at the St. Helena Institute, the Mykolaiv Orphanage, and at E. Raphoff's music courses.
